Strengthening Regional Law Enforcement Collaboration: ASEANAPOL Secretariat's Courtesy Visit to Canadian High Commission, Kuala Lumpur

On April 16, 2024, representatives from the ASEANAPOL Secretariat visited the High Commission of Canada in Kuala Lumpur. This visit highlighted the ongoing collaboration between the High Commission of Canada, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP—an esteemed ASEANAPOL Observer), and ASEANAPOL.
The Canadian delegation included Mr. Thomas Tomiye, Liaison Officer, and Mr. Rohan Coelho, First Secretary-Liaison Officer. ASEANAPOL was represented by Police Colonel David Martinez Vinluan, Executive Director; Police Senior Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Huu Ngoc, Director of Plans and Programmes; DSP Chan Yew Hiok, Police Services Officer I; and ASP Nithia Perumal, Police Services Officer II.
The meeting opened with Executive Director Vinluan providing an overview of ASEANAPOL's structure, highlighting the organization’s focus on ten core crime areas. He further elaborated on the Secretariat's capacity building and training initiatives aimed at equipping police officers from ASEANAPOL member countries with the necessary skills to address transnational organized crime effectively.
The High Commission of Canada reaffirmed its support for ASEANAPOL, with both parties recognizing the importance of increased collaboration to tackle transnational crime effectively, particularly in the areas aligned with ASEANAPOL's core focus.
The visit concluded with a commitment to explore additional training opportunities and a customary exchange of gifts, reinforcing the positive strides towards strengthening the partnership between ASEANAPOL and Canada in addressing regional security challenges. This collaboration is a pivotal element in enhancing regional security and ensuring effective responses to transnational crimes, underscoring the value of international cooperation in law enforcement.
