On February 2, 2024, ASEANAPOL Secretariat led by Executive Director David Martinez Vinluan, Pol. Snr. Lt. Col. Nguyen Huu Ngoc - Director for Plans and Programmes, Supt. Azrul Hisham Mohd Shaffei - Head of Administrative Technical Staff and DSP Suresh Subramaniam - DSP for Plans & Programmes met with International Relation Unit of IGP’s Secretariat of Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) led by The Honourable Senior Assistant Commissioner (SAC) Supramaniam Ramasamy, Supt. Loh Pey Pey - Supt. of International Relations, IGP 's Secretariat, ASP Legah Kanniah - ASP of International Relations, IGP 's Secretariat Insp. Nurul Nadia binti Watimin- Insp. of International Relations, IGP 's Secretariat and from Wildlife Crime bureau is DSP Mohd. Faiz Francis bin Abdullah - Wildlife Crime bureau, RMP and ASP Zarina bt Yahya - Wildlife Crime bureau, RMP to discuss the conduct of the TRIPOD 2 discussions in Malaysia.
The meeting is a follow-up to the previously held TRIPOL projects (Targeting Regional Investigations for Policing Opportunities & Development) held in Thailand and Lao PDR. The project plays pivotal role in supporting wildlife enforcement agencies in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines from 2021 to 2023. FREELAND, dialogue partner of ASEANAPOL, is excited to introduce the second phase, "TRIPOD-2" covering Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Lao PDR. ASEANAPOL Secretariat will serve as the coordinating partner for this initiative in securing support from Royal Malaysia Police.
TRIPOD-2 is a two year project fully funded by the US State Department. The culmination of the project involves the establishment of a regional counter-wildlife trafficking network supported by ASEANAPOL Secretariat and the Secretariat to Co-Host a one day Round table Meeting with 36 participants officers from various agencies such as the Wildlife Crime Bureau (RMP), Perhilitan, Royal Malaysian Custom, Immigration Department, Interpol NCB Malaysia, Attorney General Office, RMP Border Police( PGA), Marine Police (RMP), Maritime Enforcement Agency, Anti Money Laundering Department (RMP), Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and other relevant agencies deemed appropriate. The event tentatively schedule on April 2024. The location suggested is at the boarder town of North Peninsular Malaysia.
The meeting was indeed fruitful in that harmonizes in creating a comprehensive platform for deepen cooperation between both parties in exchanging best practices and establishing networking in the forthcoming years.
